There are many psychological disorders that affect the lives of many individuals throughout the
world. These disorders disturb the brains of these individuals and they have to live with this
burden everyday of their lives. One of these disorders is depression. Depression is, “a common
and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you
act,” (Association, 2013). This is a very serious disorder that troubles a lot of people’s lives.
Sadly this disorder is one that can lead to the tragedy of suicide. Some of the symptoms of this
mental disorder is thoughts of deaths and suicide, feelings of deep sadness, difficulty thinking,
loss of energy, and lost of interest of activities that once enjoyed. These are awful symptoms that
just worsen the lives of the people that are infected with this disorder. The treatments that are
offered to help overcome this disorder are of course medication, psychotherapy, and
electroconvulsive therapy. There are many medications out there in the world that are called antidepressants. These medications help try to alter the mood of the patient that they are given to.
There are also other medications out there that are used to help people with depression.
Psychotherapy which is just another term used to describe one on one therapy with a psychiatrist.
This is the type of therapy where the doctor or psychiatrist helps the patient talk through their
problems and offer solutions for the patient to do to help them through their disorder. This
therapy can also be in groups or with couples. This type of therapy can last for just a few weeks
or even years. The last type of treatment plan that I will discuss today is the electroconvulsive
therapy. Electroconvulsive therapy is therapy that, “involves a brief electrical stimulation of the
brain while the patient is under anesthesia,” (Association, 2013). This therapy makes the brain
have a controlled seizure that helps relives the symptoms of depression, this therapy does not
cause any damage to the brain. This therapy is usually used to if the patient doesn’t respond to
the medication or psychotherapy treatment plans. All these treatment plans offer the family and
the patient to cope by letting the individual get better through many treatment options.

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), is a severe form of disassociation in which an individual
has more than one distinct identity (WebMD.com). This disorder used to be known as multiple
personality disorder until 1994 when it was considered separate identities. The name was
changed because as studies progressed a better understanding of the condition characterized it
more as fractured identity. A person suffering from DID cannot connect the different aspects of
identity, memory, and consciousness into a single self. The typical primary identity is passive,
dependent, and depressed. When the alternative personalities present themselves, they carry a
specific name, age, gender, vocabulary contrasting the primary identity
(Psychology.Today.com). In cultural and religious practices, possession like identities manifest
with the primary identity under the control of supernatural being(s). These can be classified as
disorders when they cause distress and are not part of cultural or religious practices. The cause
of DID is not clearly understood, though many that suffer from it report sever abuse during
childhood, both physical and sexual. The disorder is also more common among family
members. In spite the diagnosis of DID being a controversial one, considered prompted by the
therapist, it has grown more common.
Symptoms of DID according to DSM-5:
Two or more distinct personalities in which some cultures will describe as possession.
Change in behavior, consciousness, memory, perception, cognition and motor function.
Gaps in memory, “loss of time”
Significant impairment in social or occupational areas of functioning.
The treatment for DID is extensive psychotherapy in an attempt to deconstruct the alter
personalities. In the case of cultural and religious possession or beliefs an exorcism may be
considered. No medication is available for this disorder, though antidepressants and anti-anxiety
medications and even tranquilizers may be given to control the associated symptoms
(ClevelandClinic.org).
