I think the top five diversity skills are having respect, being flexible, honesty, being open,
and having good communication skills. Having respect is an important quality in any leader,
but becomes especially important when leading a diverse workforce. Differences in opinion
are bound to happen in this environment, and maintaining respect for the individual in spite
of these differences is necessary. Being flexible is also important in dealing with different
people with different cultural backgrounds, who each may have a different way of looking at
things, impacting the way they work. This one is very important because those same
differences in perspective are going to be the diverse viewpoints that are so vital to seeing
the big picture when developing new innovations. Honesty is an important quality for any
leader, and leading a diverse group is no exception. People need to be able to trust their
leader, regardless of what their background is. Being open to new ideas is important since a
diverse workforce brings new ideas to the table. If a leader dismisses ideas that he is not
familiar with, the company could end up losing out on a better way of doing things. Lastly,
having good communication skills is especially important on a diverse team to ensure that
there are no miscommunications and that everyone is on the same page. People from
different areas can be accustomed to different styles of communication. Being able to
successfully interact with everyone on the team is of the utmost importance.
If the leaders do not have these skills, the organization will find it more difficult to hire and
retain a diverse workforce. This can lead to everyone having the same old ideas that can
become stale and stall progress. On an individual level, the relationships between a leader
and his followers can make all the difference. An employee who is made to feel like part of
team will feel satisfied at work, and will want to contribute more, which will also benefit the
organization.
Globalization is controversial because there are clear winners and others who have a lot to
lose. With technical support, there seems to be growing trend to replace American
employees with people overseas. Help desks no longer need to be located near the caller.
Those jobs previously provided Americans with a good salary and benefits. Now, the
company can pay less money to someone overseas, so the company wins by saving money,
which is a valid argument in favor of globalization. If that savings can then be passed onto
the consumer, then globalization is benefitting the consumer as well. The ones losing on
this deal, which is a big argument against globalization, are those who are laid off. This is so
controversial that after the news went national that Disney was laying off information
technology workers to outsource their jobs to India, Disney abandoned the plan and
rescinded the layoffs (“Disney Suddenly Cancels Layoffs”, 2015). In addition to losing jobs,
sometimes the people who remain employed are subjected to overwhelming work
demands. A friend of mine is a technician, and her company is reducing their workforce
through attrition. There is an abundance of work to be filled, so they put pressure on their
workers to work overtime. If anyone complains about not wanting to work extra, they are
made to feel like they are lucky that to still have a job.

Interpersonal skills: These are the skills used every day when communicating and interacting
with other people both individually and in groups. Those who possess strong interpersonal
skills are more often successful in both their personal and professional lives. A person who
possess interpersonal skills have the ability to do a wide range of things centered around
communication such as: listening, questioning and understanding body language. These are
also skills associated with emotional intelligence, or the ability to understand and manage
one’s own and others’ emotions.
Flexible thinking skills and adaptability: The ability to be flexible and adaptable in response
to changing situations and needs are the keys to success especially in the fast-pace
workplaces of today. In order to navigate through a new process, and help others do the
same, we need to change not only what we do but the ways in which we approach the
change as well. Things such as new technology, globalizing businesses all lead to changing
needs in the work place. If we continue to do things the way we’ve been doing them we
risk reduced productivity and well as conflict and other challenges.
