Staff retention has been an ongoing issue in the operating room for many years. Nurses are unprepared for the
amount of cases and the intensity of the cases that come through the doors daily. Many nurses feel that they do not
know what to do or who to contact for the information. This has led to many nurses quitting and the operating
room being understaffed. This comes after the nurse has gone through training and many hours of pay spent on
them. There is a need for more training for the nurses with access to current policies and procedures for them to
follow. This will not leave the nurse feeling as though all of the pressure is on their shoulders.
Description of the Strategy:
The operating room manager will instill a new training policy that will include where to find policies, needed
phone numbers, and making sure that new is able to experience different surgeries. There will be a sign-off sheet
that each new employee as well as a meeting with the manager at the completion of this sheet. The new employee
will be able to explain what they have seen and they feel they need help with.
What is the Issue?
The issue is new nurses not being able to have all available resource at their disposal. This leaves the nurse feeling
abandoned and not knowing what to do. There are many components to consider in the care of a surgical patient
and none of these should be left for the nurse to investigate while involved in a surgery.
What is the Action?
The action is to create a training policy that will educate the new nurses on what action to take. This training
course will include current policies, where to find policies, current surgeon preference cards, a list of unit phone
numbers, and the chain of command.
What is the Expected Outcome?
The expected outcome is to retain 85% of nurses that are hired after the use of the new training program.
