Example Response Paper: Hindsight Bias
Response Paper 1
Hindsight bias, also sometimes called the I-knew-it-all-along effect, is the psychological
phenomenon I chose for this response paper. Hindsight bias is the tendency for us to think that we could
have predicted the outcome ahead of time once we know how things turned out. Once people know the
outcome of an event, it is easy to make cause-and-effect connections that led to that outcome and
explain it after-the-fact, so it seems obvious that we could have predicted it beforehand.
I can see this happening in my own experience. For example, after my best friend broke up with
her boyfriend, it seemed obvious to me that their relationship was doomed form the start. All of the
signs were there. It seemed to me that she should have known not to get involved with the guy so it was
partially her fault. Another example was just the other day when I got sick after eating some cold
pepperoni pizza that had been sitting out on the counter since the night before. In hindsight, it was
obvious that I should have known better, even though I have eaten old and cold pizza several times in
the past without a problem.
Now that I am aware of this tendency, I plan to try to be a bit more skeptical of things that seem
obvious in hindsight. Just because something is easy to explain after-the-fact doesn’t mean that it was
easy to predict ahead of time. Also, I need to be a little bit more forgiving of people who make mistakes,
like my friend getting involved with a guy that would turn out to be a jerk. It is important not to be quick
to blame people when bad things happen to them just because in hindsight it seems that they should
have known better. When it comes down it, you can’t know what you know until you know it!
