Appropriate dress code is very important in an organization. It poses positive
effects on the working environment. Campbellsville University is going to
initiate the new policy of having dress code for faculties and staffs of
Campbellsville University. This policy has won the majority of two out of
three voters. But when a new policy is going to be implemented in an
organization it needs cooperation from the each member of the organization.
So it is required to gain the cooperation of the third party to make the
change effective throughout the organization. It is not possible for a day to
pass by without us being involved in some form of negotiation. It can be as
simple as convincing a friend to join you for lunch in a nearby hotel or as
complicated as negotiating a stake in a business. To persuade the third party
to join us, I would take my time to study the third party. I would also take
the first few minutes to get the attention of this party. I would focus on his
or her interests and fears. At this point, I would come up with a passionate
topic that will assist me in gathering more information about the third party.
During the conversation, I will try to put myself in the shoes of the third
party, to understand their concerns (Borg, 2013).
In the process, I would try to examine the reason behind the resistance. I
would be keen to observe the emotions of the third party so that I can find
out if previous experiences may have caused his or her tough stand
(Maaravi, Ganzach & Pazy, 2011). The reason I would be doing all these is
to prepare my arguments so that I will only use one chance to gain the
cooperation of the third party. When my turn to speak comes, I would
employ strong emotions to demonstrate the strength and passion of my
position in regards to the new rules (Borg, 2013). I would ensure that
communication is clear and concise to get rid of misunderstandings that
would occur in the course of the negotiation.
I would also use this chance to explain to the third party, how “agreeing to
the dress code” would meet his interests as well as address his fears. I
would provide statistical evidence to support or claims hoping to win over
the third party. I also encourage my partner to remain open to new positions
and brainstorm to find new solutions. Lastly, I would generate a picture for
the third party to see what would look like if the new policy is passed
(Maaravi et al., 2011). I would make it realistic and vivid to make him, or
her feel that passing the policy is the only way out. I would finish by calling
the third party to join us in passing the policy.
