FYS Spring 2019
Various Voices: Religion and Contemporary Challenges
Research Proposal #2
Deadline: June 1st in Canvas
Topic: Explore a topic that we covered in class or related to religion and a social issue.
You will have to use three sources.
At least one outside the class reading and one class reading.
Your final paper should be 900-1,000 words (Give or take 50 words!)
12-point font – double space
1. Find a topic.
The theme of the course is exploring narratives of religious figures. You may want to
explore the background of your authors. What is their argument? In addition you need to explain
how their religious background may contribute to their ideas on an issue. How does one
person’s perspective informed by the person’s religious background?
For example, you may be interested in the Islamic view of zakat. You have two articles
already. You could use the Guardian piece as background information and the NYT article for a
person’s perspective. You also have to research more ideas on Islam and Zakat. In another
example, you could write about Martin Luther King. How does his theology affect his idea on
the civil rights movement? You have one of his sources already. There are many other sources
for that topic. You may want to do something different like “Taoism and the Environment.”
I can be a resource to you and point you to sources that can be helpful. I will put
Prothero’s God is Not One on course reserve.
